Kyiv's forces have expanded a foothold on the Russian-controlled bank of the Dnieper river in southern Ukraine, a new war map suggests.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a U.S.-based think tank, published new maps showing the progress of Ukraine's counteroffensive along the southern front line as part of its Sunday update on the conflict. It assessed that Kyiv had made advances on the east (left) bank of the Dnieper.

"Ukrainian forces continued offensive operations...and made confirmed gains in western Zaporizhia Oblast and on the east (left) bank of Kherson Oblast on November 5," the think tank said.

Kyiv's troops reached the occupied side of the Dnieper in mid-October after extensive cross-river operations. That followed Ukraine's successful liberation of the city of Kherson and the west bank of the river toward the end of 2022.

Russian military blogger Rybar reported last week that more teams of marines had crossed the river to support fellow Ukrainian troops.

The ISW said Ukrainian forces continued their activity on the east bank of Kherson Oblast on Sunday and made confirmed gains.

It said geolocated footage posted on November 4 indicated that Ukrainian forces had marginally advanced on the southwestern corner of a solar panel farm near Pidstepne.

Additional geolocated footage posted on November 4 confirmed that Ukrainian forces held positions in houses in Krynky, the ISW said, adding that a Russian milblogger claimed that positional battles continue in Krynky and along the Pishchanivka-Poyma line.

The think tank said Russian forces continued glide-bomb strikes against the west (right) bank of the river. It cited Ukraine's Southern Operational Command as stating that Russian forces conducted nine airstrikes with 50 glide bombs against populated areas of the west bank over the past day.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the reports and has contacted Russia's defense ministry by email for comment.

Ukraine's 46th brigade told the BBC late last month that troops held a position on the east bank, and that intense fighting was underway to recapture the village of Krynky.

The brigade said doing so would enable troops to establish a base to further an offensive that seeks to divide Russian troops and cut off their supply lines.
