As temperatures soared this week in Gaza, thousands of Palestinians flocked to the Mediterranean Sea to escape the sweltering heat that's expected to exacerbate the dire humanitarian crisis facing the enclave.

Despite the devastation wrought by Israeli bombardments during its offensive against Hamas, families are seeking solace from the relentless heat and turmoil on the eastern Mediterranean shores.

In powerful and incongruous photos captured on Friday, families can be seen cooling off in the sea and sunbathing with the ruins of Gaza City's bombed-out buildings looming in the background.

In a war zone, the weather takes a back seat to concerns about safety, food, and shelter. But when temperatures rise to extreme levels, they hit the vulnerable first. In Gaza, climate experts have warned that the summer heat could make the Strip's existing problems even worse.

According to the Climate Shift Index, a tool that quantifies the contribution of climate change to daily temperatures, the eastern Mediterranean region, including Gaza, is experiencing significant temperature anomalies this spring.

The coastal enclave has been gripped by extreme heat already this year, with temperatures climbing over 100 degrees Fahrenheit over several days in late April.

The extreme heat is part of a broader pattern, as the Middle East is heating up faster than most other regions on the planet. Scientists concluded in 2022 that the region's temperatures are rising at twice the global average rate.

The onset of punishing summer heat in the densely populated Gaza Strip, where hundreds of thousands are living in tents, has made daily life even more arduous. The humanitarian situation has worsened since the beginning of the war in October, with more than a million people displaced, according to U.N. figures.

The ongoing conflict has claimed thousands of lives and left many more injured since the Hamas attacks of Oct. 7 killed 1,200 Israelis, triggering the war. The Health Ministry in Gaza reports that more than 34,000 people have died since the conflict began, though the group does not make clear how many of those were combatants and the reliability of its casualty figures has been questioned.
