Russia's former president, Dmitry Medvedev, has taken a swipe at the U.S. for its latest tranche of sanctions against Moscow for its aggression in Ukraine, claiming America and its allies are waging war on Russia without any rules.

Medvedev is the deputy chairman of his country's Security Council and served as its head of state between 2008 and 2012. Since the start of Russian President Vladimir Putin's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, he has used his Telegram social media channel to issue hawkish statements and threaten nuclear strikes against the West.

In his latest post, Medvedev expressed his annoyance at the latest U.S. sanctions announced ahead of the G7 summit. The measures punish foreign financial institutions supporting Putin's war effort, restrict Russia's access to certain U.S. software and IT technology, and target 300 individuals and entities which "enable Russia to sustain its war effort and evade sanctions."

He mused whether Russia needs to respond to the latest measures given that it had already managed to cope with "tens of thousands of them."

Answering his own queston, Medvedev said "it is necessary" to respond, "not only for the sake of authorities, the state, but for all our people, for everyone who loves our Motherland—Russia.

"After all, the U.S.A and their a****** allies declared war on us without any rules!" he wrote. Medvedev admitted he was repeating his previous warnings when he said Russia must "every day...try to inflict maximum harm on those countries which have imposed these restrictions."

This included doing "harm to their economies, their institutions, and their rulers," he said, as well as "harm to the well-being of their citizens. Their confidence in the future."

This would involve exploiting vulnerabilities of western economies, "paralyzing the work of their companies and government agencies. Find problems in their most important technologies and strike them mercilessly."

Russia must "destroy their energy, industry, transport, banking, and social services" so as to "instill fear of the imminent collapse of all critical infrastructure."

"Are they afraid of war in space? This means they will get that too," Medvedev said as he also warned of strikes by "all possible types of weapons, except nuclear (for now)!"

Newsweek has contacted the U.S. State Department for comment.

The latest U.S. sanctions will expand existing measures on the sale of semiconductors to Russia, and provide tougher financial penalties for China, which has helped Russia's industrial base by circumventing sanctions.

"Russia continues to mortgage its future to sustain its unjust war of choice against Ukraine," Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in a statement.
