A hidden Russian soldier waiting to ambush an approaching Ukrainian fighter was shot by a covering sniper, a video posted by Kyiv's Police Brigade appears to show.

Kyiv's military released the video to their official Facebook account that showed the moment an advancing Ukrainian fighter was saved by his fellow soldier.

As the war in Ukraine approaches the 21-month stage, casualties on both sides have continued to mount. Although exact death tolls cannot be independently verified, reports on Monday claimed a total of 319,000 Russian soldiers had died since the start of the war in February 2022.

The clip, released by the United Assault Brigade of the National Police of Ukraine, shows a figure slowly moving forward through a dark, wooded area. As he advances, a crouched enemy can be seen ready to ambush.

But the Ukrainian sniper moves quickly to protect his ally and fires one shot into the shrubbery to thwart the upcoming attack.

Newsweek was not immediately able to verify the veracity of the footage.

The group wrote on their Facebook page: "Professional work of our assault group. Our fighter advances by land, and he is covered by a sniper of the 'Lyut' National Police Brigade. In the video, our shooter was working, who 'shot' the Russian occupier with a UAR-10 sniper rifle with a thermal complex."

Ukrainian forces have pointed to successes with their sniper units in the past, and Kyiv's security service recently claimed a soldier had broken the world record with a fatal shot that traveled nearly 2.5 miles.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) said in a statement to: "The SBU sniper set a world record. He hit a Russian soldier from an incredible distance."

The number of deaths amongst Ukrainian soldiers has also mounted and has now reached the point where the country is working to bring in new legislation that will see more people eligible for mobilization, according to lawmakers.

Ukrainian official Mariana Bezuhla said on Facebook that if the law is approved, it will increase the number of people who can be called up.

Ukrainian and Russian forces have started to dig in on the 600-mile front line to prepare for freezing conditions set to come with winter, according to the Institute for the Study of War.

An update from the organization said: "Ukrainian and Russian forces are continuing combat operations in eastern and southern Ukraine, although the rainy weather will likely continue to slow the pace of combat operations until winter conditions fully set in."
