Russian forces lost nearly 1,300 fighters, more than 100 vehicles of various types and 65 artillery systems in the past day, according to Ukraine, shortly after Kyiv reported the highest number of monthly Russian casualties and artillery losses in the war-torn country.

The figures published by Ukraine's military early on Tuesday on X, formerly Twitter, show that Moscow's forces lost 15 tanks, 18 armored personnel vehicles (APVs) and 69 other assorted vehicles in Ukraine since Monday morning. Russia sustained 1,290 casualties in the past 24 hours, Kyiv's armed forces said, bringing Ukraine's tally of Moscow's casualties since February 2022 to 512,420. Newsweek has as yet been unable to verify these figures.

It is notoriously difficult to pin down battlefield losses and casualty figures, and experts urge caution when dealing with tallies offered up by either side in a conflict. Newsweek has reached out to the Russian Defense Ministry for comment via email.

The figures, however, do offer some insight into the impact the war, now well into its third year, has had on Ukraine's and Russia's armed forces as both sides look to replenish their losses.

Over the weekend, Kyiv said Russia had sustained the highest number of monthly casualties in Ukraine since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion. Russian forces in Ukraine lost 38,940 fighters in May, Ukraine's Defense Ministry said on Saturday. In a separate statement, Kyiv said May marked the highest number of Russian monthly artillery losses in Ukraine of the war, reaching 1,160 systems "destroyed" in May.

Although Western analysis often puts Russia's total casualties lower than Ukraine's estimates, the British Defense Ministry said on Friday that Moscow had likely suffered more than 500,000 casualties since early 2022. Russia's average daily casualties in May topped 1,200—the highest of the war so far, the U.K. government said.

Russia's Defense Ministry had not published statistics on purported daily Ukrainian losses at the time of writing, but said on Monday that Ukraine had sustained 1,160 casualties over the previous day.

High counts for Russia's casualties are likely down to Moscow's sustained pushes on various parts of the front line with ill-trained troops, the British government said late last week. "Russia employs small-scale but costly wave attacks" to try to overwhelm Ukraine's defenses, the U.K. Defense Ministry added.

Last month, Russia launched an offensive on Ukraine's northeastern Kharkiv region, opening up a new front to the war. Ukrainian officials said, however, that fighting in the eastern Donetsk region of Ukraine blazed on or intensified following the start of cross-border attacks on Kharkiv.

Moscow has not nodded to its own losses since September 2022, when former Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said just under 6,000 Russian fighters had been killed.

The BBC's Russian service and Russian independent outlet Mediazona reported last month that they could confirm the deaths of at least 54,185 Russian soldiers from February 2022, up to May 22, 2024.
