Russia lost 247 vehicles and nearly 100 artillery systems in Ukraine since the start of the month, according to Kyiv, as fighting rages on across the eastern front lines.

Between early on June 1 and the morning of June 3, Russia lost 39 tanks, 55 armored personnel vehicles and 153 vehicles of various other types, including fuel tanks, according to statistics from Kyiv's military. In the same period, Moscow also lost 96 artillery systems, Ukraine's numbers indicate.

Newsweek could not independently verify Ukraine's figures, and has reached out to the Russian Defense Ministry for comment.

For the same period, Moscow said Ukraine had lost 17 tanks and armored vehicles, 55 other military vehicles and 59 artillery pieces. Newsweek could not independently verify this.

It is notoriously difficult to pin down battlefield losses, and experts urge caution when dealing with tallies offered up by either side in a conflict. The figures, however, do offer some insight into the toll of more than two years of full-scale war on both militaries, as Russia plugs away with pushes on Ukrainian positions in the northeast and further south.

Over the weekend, Ukraine's military said that Kyiv had destroyed 880 Russian armored vehicles throughout May, the second-largest number of vehicles lost in a single month since the outbreak of full-scale war in February 2022.

In a separate statement, Kyiv said May marked the highest number of Russian monthly artillery losses in Ukraine of the war, reaching 1,160 systems "destroyed."

Artillery and armored vehicles are key capabilities for Kyiv and Moscow as Ukraine tries to fend off Russian assaults along the hundreds of miles of front line.

Ukraine's armed forces said on Monday morning that Russia had not actively attacked in the Kharkiv region since the start of the day, with Ukrainian forces consolidating defenses in the area.

Moscow's troops poured over the border into the northeastern Kharkiv region last month, opening up a new front in the war. Ukrainian officials said Russia hoped to overstretch Ukraine's scarce resources ahead of Western aid arriving in the country, pulling equipment and crew away from bitter clashes in the east.

Kyiv reported fierce fighting south of the city of Kupiansk and west of the Russian-controlled eastern city of Avdiivka, toward the strategic settlement of Pokvrosk, in Ukraine's Donetsk region on Monday.

Moscow's Defense Ministry said on Sunday that its forces had captured Umanske, a village west of Avdiivka and to the southeast of Pokrovsk. In a separate statement on Monday, Russia said its troops had "repelled" four Ukrainian counterattacks east of Pokrovsk, including the village of Ocheretyne.
