Russia has continued to suffer high losses of troops and equipment, according to Ukraine's latest figures, which come as both sides face challenging conditions because of bad weather and snow.

Ukraine's General Staff said in an update on Tuesday that over the previous day Russia had lost 860 troops, taking its estimate of the total combat losses suffered by Moscow's forces since the war started in February 2022 to 326,400. It added that Russia had lost three tanks in the same 24-hour period, taking the total number of the vehicles lost in the war to 5,523.

A precise figure for Russian losses is difficult to assess but Kyiv's tally comes amid an uptick of Russian troop losses given by Ukraine, which have increased from between 300 and 600 soldiers a day in early July to between 600 and 1,000 since the start of October.

The British Defense Ministry said on Monday that Russian forces have probably suffered "some of the highest rates" of losses since the start of the war, largely as a result of their offensive against Avdiivka in the Donetsk Oblast.

The U.K. officials said that Russia's losses had reached a daily average of 931 troops this month, citing Ukraine's figures, and although the British MOD cannot verify the methodology, "the figures are plausible."

Newsweek has been unable to verify the claims of Ukraine and has contacted the Russian defense ministry for comment. Meanwhile, other estimates give lower Russian troop losses.

At the end of October, British defense officials said Russian losses totaled up to 190,000 personnel, including those killed and permanently injured, not including Wagner Group mercenaries.

Investigation outlet Mediazona and the BBC News Russian service said on November 17 that 37,052 Russian soldiers had been killed, although because this figure was drawn from publicly available data, the actual death toll "is likely significantly higher."

As Russia's losses mount, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov has said that 3,000 of his men possessing "high combat training" and "unbreakable motivation" were ready to form new units and join the war effort in Ukraine.

"To solve the tasks set by our Supreme Commander-in-Chief Vladimir Putin, we will not spare any effort or resources," Kadyrov wrote on Telegram.

"The soldiers are already ready to go to the Northern Military District zone to counter Nazi and NATO aggression," he added, repeating the Kremlin line for the justification of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The Institute for the Study of War said on Monday that Russian and Ukrainian forces are continuing their ground attacks despite challenging weather conditions, which include snow and a cyclone that damaged infrastructure in parts of coastal southern Ukraine.

One of the think tank's latest maps notes geolocated footage showing Russian advances in the industrial area southeast of Avdiivka on November 25 and November 26, although no progress was made on Monday.
