Clashes have broken out near a pro-Palestinian encampment at the University of California Los Angeles.

Los Angeles Police Department "is responding immediately" to Chancellor Gene Block's request for support on campus, a spokesperson for city Mayor Karen Bass wrote on X, formerly Twitter, in the early hours of Wednesday.

Videos on social media appeared to show fireworks being fired from one set of protesters into an encampment. Student newspaper the Daily Bruin reported pro-Israel counter-protesters had "violently" tried to enter the encampment since late Tuesday night

"Horrific acts of violence occurred at the encampment tonight and we immediately called law enforcement for mutual aid support," Mary Osako, vice chancellor for UCLA Strategic Communications, said in a statement to the newspaper.

"The fire department and medical personnel are on the scene. We are sickened by this senseless violence and it must end."

The LAPD has been contacted for comment via email.
