Republicans Save Rashida Tlaib From Marjorie Taylor Greene

House Republicans killed Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene's hopes of censuring Democratic Representative Rashida Tlaib for her comments on Israel in the wake of the war with Hamas.

The House voted Wednesday on a resolution introduced by Greene that would censure Tlaib over her response to the Israel-Hamas war. In remarks on the House floor last week, Greene said the measure censured the Michigan Democrat for "antisemitic activity, sympathizing with terrorist organizations and leading an insurrection at the United States Capitol Complex." Greene has referred to an October 18 rally at the Capitol calling for a ceasefire as an insurrection.

Twenty-threeHouse Republicans voted to table the resolution. Among those who voted to kill the motion were Representatives Thomas Massie, John Moolenar, Bill Huizenga and John Duarte. Moolenar and Huizenga are both from Tlaib's home state of Michigan and Massie, usually an ally for Greene, cited free speech concerns.

Greene is facing her own censure resolution from Representative Becca Balnit who is accusing the conservative firebrand of "repeatedly fanned the flames of racism, antisemitism, hate speech against the LGBTQ community, Islamophobia, Asian hate, xenophobia and other forms of hatred." Greene has dismissed the measure as "retaliation" for her resolution against Tliab.

Tlaib, the only Palestinian-American member of Congress and staunch Israel critic, has been under immense scrutiny for her response to the Israel-Hamas war that has killed 1,400 Israelis and 8,525 Palestinians, according to the Associated Press.

The Michigan Democrat has drawn the ire of even some of her own colleagues, like Representatives Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Ritchie Torres and Josh Gottheimer, who have condemned her statements in the wake of the war.

Thirteen Democrats abstained from voting but none voted against tabling the motion and Tlaib has defended her position and blasted Green's resolution as "deeply Islamophobic."

"I am proud to stand in solidarity with Jewish peace advocates calling for a ceasefire and an end to the violence. I will not be bullied, I will not be dehumanized, and I will not be silenced," Tlaib said in a statement last week.

She added, "I will continue to call for ceasefire, for the immediate delivery of humanitarian aid, for the release of hostages and those arbitrarily detained, and for every American to be brought home."

Greene is also facing her own censure resolution, a measure introduced by Democratic Representative Becca Balint after Greene moved to censure Tlaib. Balint has accused Greene of "repeatedly fanned the flames of racism, antisemitism, hate speech against the LGBTQ community, Islamophobia, Asian hate, xenophobia and other forms of hatred."

In response to the Democratic-led resolution, Greene said, "In retaliation for filing this censure resolution, Democrats launched their own effort, filled with a litany of lies, to censure me to protect their terrorist-sympathizing colleague."
