Stephen King Rips Marjorie Taylor Greene Over Israel—'Are You Tripping?'

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has been called out online for posting false information amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict by none other than horror author Stephen King. The Republican has been vocal about her opposition to sending military aid to the Israelis, long-time U.S. allies.

After conflict broke out in the Middle East following Hamas' unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7, Israel launched a war on the Islamist group in the Gaza Strip, with extensive air and ground assaults. As of November 6, at least 1,400 people have been killed in Israel, the Associated Press reported, while 10,022 people have been killed in Gaza, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

American aid to Israel has gained significant attention, and Greene's opposition is well supported by some Republicans. In 2022 alone, the United States committed more than $3.3 billion in foreign aid to Israel, with the military receiving 99.7 percent of that total. Israel has been the "largest cumulative recipient of U.S. foreign assistance" since the end of World War II, per the Congressional Research Service. At least $158 billion has been sent to Israel by the U.S. in "bilateral assistance and missile defense funding."

Greene, a MAGA Republican and a Donald Trump loyalist, posted to X, formerly known as Twitter, in late October, saying that she would be "voting NO on all funding packages for the Ukraine war (as I have from the beginning) and now the Israel war."

Now Greene has written on the platform again, posting on November 5: "Israel is literally dominating in their war with Hamas after being brutally attacked killing thousands of innocent people, and not one single American dollar has been spent on that war yet. Just think about that."

Plenty of people were quick to correct her, including novelist King: "Are you tripping? We've given them aid and armaments for decades."

Newsweek reached out to a representative of King for comment via email on Monday. A spokesperson for Greene refused to comment.

Greene was also corrected by X's own Community Notes, a function introduced by the platform that aims to help fight misinformation there.

Affixed to the bottom of her original post, it reads: "'And not one single American dollar' is false. Since WW2, the U.S.A. has given Israel ~$260B in aid, much of it for military. Plus another $10B for their Iron Dome defense system (currently being used in the war). The grants require the buying of American technology & hardware."

People flocked to Greene's original post, with many unimpressed with the incorrect information she shared.

"You would think the so-called Congresswoman would know that American dollars have been spent on Israel's military support for decades," one person wrote.

"We give Israel billions every single year. Plenty of America's money has been spent on this genocide," posted another.

A third person commented: "The level to which you are uninformed on this topic is inexcusable for someone in your position and, in an ideal world, would immediately disqualify you from holding it ever again."

Others shared their support for Greene while acknowledging she could have worded her comment better.

"I love #MTG [Marjorie Taylor Greene], however, this could have been written much better," one person wrote.

Another added: "It seems the point was lost in translation. The U.S. does provide aid to Israel, as it's a longstanding ally. The intent might have been to highlight that Israel hasn't needed extra financial help from the U.S. to engage in its recent conflict with Hamas. Politicians should remember that clarity is crucial online. Missteps in communication can quickly escalate and reflect on their entire party, especially when discussing such sensitive topics."
