‘I know what it’s like to be beaten by an Indian B team’: Tim Paine on England’s series defeat in India

Tim Paine says he knows a bit or two about losing to India’s B team in a Test series.

The former Australian captain has compared England’s series defeat in India to the 2020-21 Border Gavaskar Trophy, where Rishabh Pant’s heroics in the final Test help India seal a 2-1 victory in a dramatic fashion.

India has an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series. It won the second test in Visakhapatnam by 106 runs, the third test in Rajkot by 434 runs and the fourth test in Ranchi by five wickets to capture the series. England won the first test in Hyderabad by 28 runs.

“They have been playing against the Indian B team because there has been no Kohli, no Shami, Bumrah got rested last Test, KL Rahul is out and Rishabh Pant is still making his way back from that accident,” former Australia batsman Simon Katich said on Around the Wicket podcast on ESPN Australia.

“They are not their strongest team but it just goes to show that the depth in Indian cricket is huge because there are some big names coming into this next era of Indian cricket. Jaiswal is leading the charge; young Jurel was magnificent in the last Test as well. So India are looking very strong.”

Paine, who was on the receiving end from one of the India’s weakest side during the 2020-21 Test series at home, said: “I know what it’s like to be beaten by an Indian B team.”

“Unfortunately, it happened to us on our home soil. But yes, some huge names out for India, which should have certainly helped the English,” said Paine.

However, the former wicketkeeper-batsman said he is absolutely enjoying the thrashing, India are giving to England.

“I thoroughly enjoy watching England play the game, I love the way they are going about it. I love watching them lose. Don’t get me wrong but they are entertaining and exciting,” he said.

Centuries from Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill headlined a commanding batting display from India on Friday as it gained complete control of the fifth test against England on the second day.

Gill top scored with 110 runs while Sharma added 103 as the duo paved the way for India’s first innings’ total of 473-8 in 120 overs.
