The NRL is investigating a complaint made against Sydney Roosters prop Spencer Leniu, after an alleged racial slur made towards Brisbane Broncos five-eighth Ezra Mam.

On Sunday, as the NRL season opened in Las Vegas, both sets of players became entangled in the second half, and saw Leniu placed on report as a result.

Mam, who is Indigenous, was heard telling on-field referee Adam Gee "he called me a monkey".

Speaking post-match, Broncos coach Kevin Walters said his side were unequivocal in their belief and support of 21-year-old Mam, who was left "in tears" by the alleged slur.

"He's pretty upset in there," Walters said. "He's adamant (there was a slur), but we'll leave it with the NRL. They're looking at it.

"We certainly support Ezra and our player and everything that's around that."

On the other side, Roosters coach Trent Robinson urged for patience, and to let the correct process play out.

"So Ezra is adamant... that doesn't mean it's right," he said.

"He obviously made the complaint but that doesn't mean that it's right, it will go through the formal process as it should."

On Monday (NZ time) Broncos players reportedly confronted Leniu in the team hotel, before the Samoa international was removed from the situation by the Roosters' media manager.
