Dame Lisa Carrington awarded New Zealand's Lonsdale Cup for 2023 World Championship success

 Fresh from her achievements at the 2024 Halberg Awards, Dame Lisa Carrington has claimed another honour in being awarded the NZ Olympic Committee's Lonsdale Cup.

The Lonsdale Cup is awarded for outstanding contributions to Olympic or Commonwealth Games sport over a calendar year.  

Already New Zealand's most decorated Olympian before this year's Paris Games, Dame Lisa has now won the Lonsdale Cup four times, adding last year to 2016, 2017 and 2021.  

Over the last 12 months, Dame Lisa won three separate world titles, with her favoured K1 200, K1 500 supplemented by success in the K4 500, alongside Olivia Brett, Alicia Hoskin and Tara Vaughan.  

That success saw Dame Lisa win both sportswoman of the year and the supreme award at last week's Halberg Awards in Auckland.   

"The Lonsdale Cup holds so much history and to have my name there alongside some of New Zealand's Olympic greats is pretty special," said Dame Lisa.  

"It's great to look back on the success we had last year, both individually and in the K4 where we made history. 

I'd like to thank all my teammates, my coach, Gordy [Gordon Walker] and Canoe Racing New Zealand for helping me to get to where I am.  

"This really is a shared award and the success I have is only possible because of the work done behind the scenes by this team and by the team I share the boat with."  

Since her Olympic debut at London 2012, Dame Lisa has won five gold medals and one bronze, to go with her 15 golds, five silver and three bronzes at world championship events.  

A fourth Lonsdale Cup win moves Dame Lisa to within one of the all-time record holder, Dame Valerie Adams, who has claimed it five times.
