The Railways cricket team pulled off the highest successful chase in Ranji Trophy history during the ongoing 2023-24 season against Tripura in their final league match at the MBB Stadium, Agartala on Monday.

In what has been a remarkable game, Railways had initially conceded a 44-run lead to Tripura after being bundled for 105 in pursuit of the opposition’s 149 in the first innings. The home side then racked up 333 runs in the second innings to set a 378-run target for Railways.

In a chase that began in the second half of day three, Railways collapsed once again with the top-order frittering at 31 for three. However, opener Pratham Singh and Mohammed Saif (106) notched up a 175-run stand for the fourth wicket that helped Railways claw back into the chase. Pratham remained unbeaten on 169 (16 fours, one six) alongwith captain Upendra Yadav (27 not out) as Railways crossed the daunting target in 103 overs.

Railways broke the record held by Saurashtra who chased down a 372-run target against Uttar Pradesh in their victorious 2019-20 campaign. Assam’s 370-run chase against Services in the 2008-09 season stands third on the list.

Railways will finish on 24 points in Elite Group C after seven rounds but will miss out on a knockouts berth as both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are set to cross the mark from their respective last matches. Gujarat currently stands on the first spot with 25 points after seven games.

Despite the defeat, it was Tripura’s best-ever finish to an Elite Group Ranji Trophy season, with 17 points after their 200th match in the tournament.
