IND vs ENG: Rohit Sharma hits 11th Test hundred in Rajkot against England, breaks records

India skipper Rohit Sharma slammed his 11th Test hundred during the third Test against England at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot on Thursday.

Opting to bat after winning the toss, India suffered three early jolts with Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Rajat Patidar departing in quick time. Rohit joined Ravindra Jadeja at 33 for three and steered the team to Lunch at 93 for three with his first half-century of the series.

The pair strengthened their partnership further in the second session where India added 92 runs without losing a wicket. It was also the first hundred-run stand for India in the series so far.

Rohit eventually brought up his third Test ton as captain off 157 deliveries on the back of 11 fours and two sixes, in the third session.

Rohit also completed 1000 Test runs against England during the knock, reaching the mark in 23 innings with three hundreds and four fifties.

Rohit also extended his record as the leading century-maker among all openers in the World Test Championship across three cycles since 2019. The 36-year-old has struck eight hundreds and as many fifties across 50 innings in the tournament.

Rohit also went past MS Dhoni (78) to become India’s second-highest six-hitter in Test cricket with his second maximum against Joe Root. Only Virender Sehwag (91) has hit more sixes among Indians.

Rohit surpassed Sourav Ganguly (18,575) to become India’s fourth-highest run-scorer in international cricket, only behind Sachin Tendulkar (24,208), Virat Kohli (26,733) and current India head coach Rahul Dravid (24,208).

The Mumbaikar also equalled Dhoni (211) for the second-most sixes as captain in international cricket, behind Eoin Morgan (233).

The hundred also marked Rohit’s 42nd ton as an international opener, equalling Chris Gayle. Only David Warner (49) and Sachin Tendulkar (45) have registered more international tons as openers.
