Shamar Joseph with a broken toe rattles Australia at Gabba

Shamar Joseph was retired hut on Day 3 after being struck by a ripping yorker from Mitchell Starc. He looked all but out from the Gabba Test against Australia, but the 24-year-old, who has been the find for West Indies on this series rattled Australia with seven-wicket haul and helped West Indies beat Australia by eight runs to level this series 1-1. Steve Smith remained unbeaten on 91.

It is West Indies’ first-ever win on the Australian soil in 27 years. West Indies haven’t won a Test in Australia since they enjoyed a 10-wicket success on a cracked-up WACA Ground pitch in Perth in February 1997 – a couple of years before either Shamar Joseph or Green were even born.

West Indies cricket posted a statement on X giving Joseph’s injury update. “Good news, as scans show no fracture in Shamar Joseph’s toe. He will continue to be monitored by the medical team and assessed tomorrow. WI wish him a speedy recovery!”

On Sunday, Joseph was brought into the attack with Australia cruising at 93 for 2 in 28 overs. Steve Smith (XX) and Cameron green (42) looked comfortable. It was Joseph’s second over that turned the tide in favour of West Indies. Joseph went through the game of Green, followed it up with a thunderous yorker to remove Travis Head, who got a pair in this match.

Joseph was not done. He dismissed Mitchell Marsh, the edge went straight to the second slip, where Athanaze can’t hold it and the ball popped out to the third slip, where Greaves hold on complete the catch. Then the Guyana born pacer knocked Alex Carey to peg Australia back.

Mitchell Starc came out swinging, scored a quickfire 21 but a miscue pull shot ended his adventure and gave Joseph his second five-wicket haul in as many Tests. Captain Pat Cummins lasted eight balls before poking one behind to give Joseph his sixth wicket.

After the Dinner Break, Alzzari Joseph got the wicket of Nathan Lyon to reduce Australia on 191 for 9. Shamar Joseph cleaned up Josh Hazlewood to seal the win.
