Post At: Jan 18/2024 12:10AM

India skipper Rohit Sharma became the first batter in T2O international history to get 5 centuries with his ton against Afghanistan in the 3rd T20I against Afghanistan.

Sharma, who had scored back to back ducks in the first 2 matches in the series, came roaring back to form with a century in 64 balls which was peppered with 10 fours and 6 sixes.

Rohit’s last century in this format came in 2018 against West Indies where he scored an unbeaten 111 not out at Lucknow.

On Wednesday, he bettered that with an unbeaten score of 121 runs in Bengaluru as he and a swashbuckling Rinku Singh (69) battered a hapless Afghanistan bowling lineup.

With the 121, Rohit also became the Indian batter to score the 4th highest individual score with only Shubman Gill’s 126 vs New Zealand in 2023, Rururaj Gaikwad’s 123 vs Australia in 2023 and Virat Kohli’s 122 against Afghanistan in 2022 before him.

The last 5 overs went for a whopping 103 runs with Rohit and Rinku completely decimating the Afghanistan bowlers with the last over going for 36 runs with 5 sixes and 1 four from the aforementioned over alone.

At one point, the match was in Afghanistan’s pockets with India tottering at 22/4 in the initial stage of the match.

Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 4, Virat Kohli was gone for a golden duck, Shivam Dube got 1 while Sanju Samson was also dismissed for a duck as India were staring at a collapse.

Fareed Ahmad Malik was the most successful bowler for Afghanistan, ending with excellent figures of 3/20, even as his colleagues were taken to the task by Rohit and Rinku.

India won the first two matches convincingly to seal the three-match series.

Earlier, Sharma won the toss and elected to bat against Afghanistan in the third and final T20 International on Wednesday.

Sanju Samson, Avesh Khan and Kuldeep Yadav came in for Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh and Jitesh Sharma in the Indian XI.

Afghanistan made three changes.
