Karnataka’s Prakhar Chaturvedi became the first player to score 400 runs in the final of the Cooch Behar Trophy after hammering an unbeaten 404 knock against Mumbai.

In the process, Chaturvedi broke Yuvraj Singh’s 24-year-old record. Playing against Bihar Under-19 side (which also had a certain Mahendra Singh Dhoni in their ranks), Yuvraj had scored 358 runs in December 1999 while representing Punjab Under-19s at the Keenan Stadium in Jamshedpur.

Chaturvedi’s knock on Monday came off 638 balls at a strike rate of 63.32 and included 46 fours and three towering sixes at the KSCA Navule Stadium.

Thanks to his knock, Karnataka, who had Won the toss and elected to field first, managed to pile on 890 runs from 223 overs before they declared after losing eight wickets. They racked up a lead of 510 runs having bundled Mumbai for just 380.

Chaturvedi took Manan Bhatt in particular to the cleaners, scoring 97 off his bowling with two of his three sixes coming off Manan’s bowling. Chaturvedi also punished Akash Pawar (scoring 79 runs off his bowling) and Prem Devkar (58 runs).

Harshil Dharmani (169 runs), Karthikeya KP (72), Samarth N (unbeaten 55) and Hardik Raj (51) kept Chaturvedi company in the middle.

For Mumbai, Ayush Mhatre was the top scorer with 145 runs with Ayush Sachin Vartak scoring 73.
