‘Bazball deserves to be seen by entire nation’: MP urges the upcoming IND vs ENG series to be televised for free in the UK

The upcoming England tour of India is one of the most anticipated series in cricketing circles. With India being a dominant side at home and England under Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes playing the “Bazzball” brand of cricket, the series promises to be a cracker.

However, with less than two weeks for the series, there has been no clarity in England on which channel the marquee series would be televised. “As it stands, the contest is yet to find a home on British television,” quoted the Telegraph.

Jamie Stone, Member of Parliament of the United Kingdom, said Test match cricket should ideally be “more available” on free-to-air TV.

“Bazball deserves to be seen by the entire nation, especially younger generations getting into cricket for the first time,” said MP, in a letter to the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport of the UK Lucy Frazer.

“[Ben] Stokes and McCullum’s revolutionary playing style has inspired so many to pick up a bat and ball for the first time. The upcoming series against India is being billed as one of the most exciting match-ups in years, yet there is a serious risk nobody will be able to watch it,” Stone added.

England last toured India in 2021; according to the publication, the situation was similar. Channel 4 sealed the deal to broadcast the series in the final moments. The four-match series came after a long Covid lockdown.” The broadcaster was partially motivated by serving a captive audience,” claimed The Telegraph.

Stone also urged that the government to get involved in the matter so that everyone in England can enjoy the series.“It is time the Government stepped in by getting broadcasters and cricket boards around the table to hammer out a deal. There is just a fortnight until the first Test and no plan whatsoever for it to be shown on British television.”
