NRL: Former NZ Warriors half Ronald Volkman to reportedly be axed by St George Illawarra Dragons after failed medical

Former NZ Warriors half Ronald Volkman's career with St George Illawarra Dragons is reportedly over before it's even begun, after a failed medical with his new club.  

Volkman, 21, was released from his Warriors contract at the end of 2023, in order to sign a one-year deal with the Dragons.  

However, according to the Daily Telegraph, Volkman has failed his medical with his new club, with a season-ending shoulder injury reportedly discovered and will result in a termination of his contract.  

It is unknown whether the issue is related to the shoulder injury that required surgery, and ended Volkman's season prematurely in 2022. 

Should the injury keep Volkman sidelined for a season, he would be left without an NRL contract for 2024, and likely unable to convince a club to sign him until next season at the earliest.   

Volkman was granted a release from the Warriors in December, after slipping down the pecking order in the club's stocks in the halves.  

Despite outstanding form for the Warriors in the reserve grade New South Wales Cup side, Volkman would have to beat competition from the likes of Te Maire Martin, Luke Metcalf and Chanel Harris-Tavita to partner Shaun Johnson at halfback.
