From T20 World Cup to the tour of Australia, here’s how Indian cricket team’s schedule looks like in 2024

Post At: Jan 09/2024 01:10PM

2023 saw Indian men’s cricket team roll through all nine teams at the ODI World Cup only to see them combust in the final against Australia in front of a vociferous home crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

2024 has started off with Rohit Sharma and Co registering a first-ever Test win at Newlands, Cape Town, one that saw the two-match Test series in South Africa end 1-1. But there’s a lot more to come in the year that’ll see India play as many as 15 Test matches and a T20 World Cup in the West Indies and United States.

Here’s what the schedule looks for the team as of January 2024.

Three T20Is vs Afghanistan: January 11 to 17

Afghanistan are touring India for a three-match T2oI series in the first half of the month. The return of captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the T20 squad for the first time since the World Cup in 2022 raises the question if the two will be part of the T20 scheme going into the World Cup later this year. This, while Hardik and Suryakumar Yadav – both of whom have captained the team in the shortest format in the meantime – recover from injuries.

1st T20: January 11, Mohali

2nd T20: January 14, Indore

3rd T20: January 17, Bangalore

Five Tests vs England: January 25 – March 11

For the first time since 2016, England will tour India for as long a Test match series. Their previous tour to India had been in 2021, when the Virat Kohli-led side claimed a 3-1 win across four Tests. While there has been a buzz of excitement to witness how England’s ultra aggressive Bazball style fares against Indian spinners, they are one of the only two teams to have won a Test series in India since 2001, having done so back in 2012. Can Ben Stokes lead them to glory in 2024 or will it be the familiar home domination story for India?

1st Test: January 25-29, Hyderabad

2nd Test: February 2-6, Visakhapatnam

3rd Test: February 15-19, Rajkot

4th Test: February 23-27, Ranchi

5th Test: March 7-11, Dharamsala

IPL 2024: March-May

While the BCCI and the IPL governing council are yet to release the final dates, the 17th edition of the Indian Premier League is likely to kickstart from March 2022 and expected to continue until the end of May, right before the T20 World Cup. It’ll be a third straight season with 10 teams and one that’s being seen as a dressed rehearsal for the World Cup.

T20 World Cup: June 1-29

The ninth edition of the tournament will see India looking to end their ICC trophy drought since 2013. Led by Rohit Sharma in the previous edition in Australia a couple of years ago, India had been knocked out by the eventual champions, England in the semifinal. A whooping 10-wicket battering.

It’ll be the first instance of 20 teams participating in the competition – five each divided in four groups, top two from each will progress to the Super 8 which will then decide the four semifinalists.

Bilaterals yet to be dated

Following the premium cricket tournament this year, there’s more in the offering for Indian men’s cricket team. While the final dates for the bilateral series are yet to be released, the composition of the games is largely known.
