Big Bash League: Melbourne Stars wicketkeeper Sam Harper hospitalised after being hit on the head

Melbourne Stars wicketkeeper Sam Harper was hospitalized after he suffered a blow in the head in the training.

The 27-year-old, who has a history of concussions, is in a stable condition but spent Friday night in hospital.

“Scans have cleared Melbourne Stars wicketkeeper Sam Harper of an acute fracture or soft tissue injury, after he was injured whilst batting in the MCG nets last night,” Melbourne Stars said in a statement.

“Harper suffered a laceration on his chin and neck and was immediately attended to by the Melbourne Stars medical team after being struck whilst attempting to ramp a ball.

“An ambulance was immediately called and Harper was taken to hospital where he stayed overnight.

“Harper will be monitored by doctors over the coming days.”

In 2020, Harper was also hospitalised after he hit his head on the ground in a freak collision with Hobart Hurricanes player Nathan Ellis while playing for the Renegades.

The Stars have subsequently signed Victorian wicketkeeper Peter Handscomb, who replaces Harper in the squad.

Handscomb has kept for Australia in T20Is and he played 51 BBL matches for Stars between 2012 and 2020 before playing two seasons at Hobart Hurricanes. He played three games for Melbourne Renegades last season as a replacement player, having not been contracted.
