England’s Nasser Hussain has recalled how former Australian legend and Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting kept track of Indian cricketer Rishabh Pant’s progress during the Ashes in England.

“I traveled with Ricky in the summer in the Ashes, and Ricky was texting him ‘how’s the progress coming along?’, and he is a box office cricketer,” Hussain was quoted speaking to ICC.

The Indian wicket-keeper batter Pant met with an accident in December of 2022. His car collided with a road divider on the Delhi-Dehradun highway in the wee hours of December 30.

The star India wicket-keeper batter was lucky to survive severe injuries due to his alertness, jumping off his Mercedes in the nick of time as the car went up in flames after hitting the divider.

“That was such a serious accident. The whole world held its breath and has been a slow recovery. You follow on social media, on my phone, and the initial first walking steps to scenes in the gym and then scenes of him playing a bit of cricket, scenes of him with Ricky (Ponting),” Hussain recalled.

Pant underwent surgery in Mumbai under the care of Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, who treated Pant’s three ligaments in the right knee in February this year.

The 26-year-old is expected to return to action again soon. Earlier in the month, he had a few glimpses of his recovery process on social media on

In a video he shared on X, previously known as Twitter, Pant can be seen attempting a plethora of weightlifting exercises as he works towards gaining full fitness before joining his Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise, Delhi Capitals, as well as the Indian squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup next year.

“Bouncing back with every rep,” the video was titled with an hourglass emoji.

In August, Pant was seen batting in a club game in Bengaluru. Pant had visited a sporting facility near Bengaluru to participate in the Independence Day celebrations organized by the JSW Foundation, which co-owns Delhi Capitals.
