IND vs SA: Gerald Coetzee is ruled out due to pelvic inflammation for Cape Town Test

Due to pelvic inflammation, south African pace bowler Gerald Coetzee has been ruled out of the New Year’s Test in Cape Town starting next week.

The 23-year-older developed the injury during the first Test in Centurion. Bowling in the second innings of Indian batting after five overs into his spell, Coetzee walked off the field and would never return to bowl again.

The young quick had an average outing compared to his colleagues, who feasted upon the technically inhibited Indian batting lineup in transition. In the first innings, Cotezee bowled 16 overs, gave away 74 runs, and picked a wicket. In the second innings, he started to give runs over fives.

While the replacement is unannounced, the hosts have an option of Lungi Ngidi and Keshav Maharaj within the squad.

Earlier in the week, standing captain Temba Bavuma was ruled out of the second Test, and Dean Elgar will be leading the side in his farewell Test. Zubayr Hammza has been named the replacement for Bavuma.

On day one, the South African skipper pulled his hamstring and hobbled off the field while chasing a ball hit through covers. “Temba is not in a great physical state,” South African coach Shukri Conrad said afterwards.

Bavuma also did not come onto bat in the first innings. “If we lost wickets early, he would have walked on. With 150 runs ahead, I felt it wasn’t necessary to risk Temba,” Conrad would add.

However, despite the injuries, South Africa thrashed India in the opening Test by an innings and 32 runs. Dean Elgar played a sublime 185-run knock in the batting innings of the Proteas, which laid the foundation for a memorable Test win.

With the ball, Kagiso Rabada was the destructor in chief with seven wickets in the match, and Nandre Burger complimented him well. All-rounder Marco Jansen had a game to remember with the bat and ball for the proteas.
