England coach goes gaga over Travis Head’s wonder knock: ‘He’s a serious player….is very tough for us’

In response to England’s 315 in the first ODI, Australia chased down the total with seven wickets intact and six overs in hand; thanks in a large part to Travis Head, who blasted an unbeaten 154 runs off 129 deliveries.

It wasn’t long after the game that England’s interim white-ball coach Marcus Trescothick heaped praise about the Australian opener.

“He’s a serious player. The form he’s in and the way he’s going about his work is very tough for us. You can see how good a player he is and the impact he has had on all the games,” Trescothick said.

“If he gets in and gets momentum going, he’s hard to bowl at, for sure. Eventually the worm will turn and hopefully we get on top of that and get a bit of luck on the other side,” he added.

Head has been in fine form in Australia’s ongoing tour of the United Kingdom – having scored two fifties (against Scotland and England) to follow up with a career-best ODI score on Thursday at Trent Bridge. This, after a year in which he guided Australia to two world titles (World Test Championship and ODI World Cup) with hundreds in both finals.

When asked if batting comes easy to him, Head humbly disagreed, “It’s never the case, got a bit lucky at the start. Jofra bowled a hell of a spell but when you can get through it, there are runs on offer, especially on this outfield and pitch.

“The environment is great, and having a clear blueprint and role in the team. I try to enjoy what I’m doing and it is coming off for me,” he added.
