England moved up to the fourth spot in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle, after overcoming Sri Lanka by five wickets in the first Test of the three-match series at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The five wicket was England’s seventh win in 14 Tests this cycle, improving their points percentage (PCT) to 41.1. Meanwhile, the Lankans suffered their third defeat in five games and dipped from 50 to 40 PCT. New Zealand are currently placed third with a 50 PCT.

England and Sri Lanka are still slated to play eight more Tests this cycle.

India and defending champions Australia are currently in the lead with PCTs of 68.5 and 62.5 respectively.

Pakistan and Bangladesh, ranked seventh and eighth respectively, can also improve their standings during their ongoing two-match series in Rawalpindi.

As of August 25, 2024, 14 Test series remain in the WTC 2023-25 cycle with eight teams in contention. With only four Tests left and a PCT of 20, West Indies have been knocked out of the race for the next year’s WTC final at Lord’s.
