Durand Cup: Sunday’s Kolkata Derby between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan Super Giant cancelled

The Durand Cup derby match between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan Super Giant, scheduled to take place at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on Sunday was cancelled due to the prevailing unrest in the city, according to various reports.

“The match between Mohun Bagan Super Giant and Emami East Bengal FC has been cancelled. All online and offline tickets will be refunded,” the organizers posted on X.

The decision was taken following a meeting between the Kolkata Police officials and organisers of the tournament. “Both the teams will be awarded a point each, while the fans will get full refund for the tickets they bought,” an official told PTI.

It is also learnt that all the Durand Cup matches slated in Kolkata could be shifted to Jamshedpur. An official communication is awaited.

There has been widespread protests in the city following the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in the city on August 9.

On Saturday, the Indian Medical Association called for a 24-hour nationwide strike to protest the rape and murder of their colleague.

The two Kolkata rivals have met each other 23 times in the Durand Cup with East Bengal coming out with the win 9 times while Mohun Bagan have won 8 times.

Recent history, meanwhile, is in the favour of the Mariners with the Green and Maroon brigade having defeated the Yellow and Gold team in last year’s final which helped them win the trophy for a record 17th time, the most by any team ever.
