India have every chance of making it a hat-trick: Ravi Shastri responds to Ricky Ponting’s claim of Australia winning Border Gavaskar Trophy in November

Ravi Shastri on Wednesday responded to Ricky Ponting’s prediction of Australia winning the Border Gavaskar Trophy this November, saying India would continue their recent dominance in the series.

The intense Test rivalry between India and Australia has had rather one-sided results over the last decade. India have won the previous four Border-Gavaskar series since 2017, twice at home (in 2016-17 and 2022-23) besides two historic series triumphs Down Under in 2018-19 and 2021-22.

However, the Aussies trumped India in the second ICC World Test Championship final in mid-2023 to claim the title for the second cycle. The two teams will lock horns with qualification for the third final, slated to be held in June 2025, on the line. The winner of the upcoming series, set to feature five Tests for the first time, will be an overwhelming favourite to make the final.

“The Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia over five Test matches is going to be a humdinger. Remember, India have beaten Australia twice on the last two tours and Australia have not had a hand on the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in almost a decade and that’s the reason why everyone will be waiting for these two heavyweights of Test match cricket over the last five to eight years to go head-to-head,” Shastri said

“It is going to be one heck of a series and India have every chance of making it a hat-trick because they’ve got their bowlers fit and if they can bat well, they can tickle (beat) Australia once again,” he added.

The five-match Test series begins on November 22 at the Optus Stadium in Perth.
