Luana Alonso, 2024 Paris Olympics: Paraguayan swimmer Luana Alonso has vehemently denied allegations that she was expelled from the Paris 2024 Olympics Village for creating an “inappropriate atmosphere.”

The controversy erupted after the 20-year-old failed to qualify for the Women’s 100m Butterfly semi-final and subsequently announced her retirement from swimming.

Alonso took to social media to refute claims that she was suspended or removed from the Olympic Village. She emphasized that she made the decision to leave Paris voluntarily.

“I just wanted to clarify that I was never kicked out or expelled from anywhere, please stop spreading false information,” Alonso said in a statement that she posted on Monday on her social media handles. “I don’t want to make any statement but I’m not going to let lies affect me either.”

The Independent had reported that the Paraguayan Olympic Committee had told French outlet Le Parisien that she had made her teammates feel uncomfortable. Paraguay Olympic Committee boss Larissa Schaerer, a former tennis player who represented her nation at the 1992 Olympics, had in fact even gone on to say: “Her presence is creating an inappropriate atmosphere within Team Paraguay.

However, Alonso has firmly denied these accusations.

The incident has sparked widespread discussion and speculation about the circumstances surrounding Alonso’s departure. As the controversy unfolds, the Paraguayan Olympic Committee faces scrutiny over its handling of the situation.
