‘Relief’, ‘the fight continues’: France players react to election results ahead of EURO 2024 semifinal

Players from the France football team, currently featuring at the EURO 2024 tournament in Germany, took to social media to celebrate the election results in their home country on Sunday.

According to reports, the Left’s New Popular Front is projected to win approximately 177-212 seats out of the 577 seats in the lower house of the parliament. This has dismissed the proposition of a far-right National Rally-controlled government, despite them acquiring the largest vote share.

France skipper Kylian Mbappe was one of the vocal critics of the political situation during the group-stages of the European Championship. “It’s an urgent situation,” Mbappe told last week in Hamburg after the National Rally won 33 percent of the popular vote in the first round. “We cannot let our country fall into the hands of these people. It is pressing. We saw the results, it’s catastrophic. We really hope it’s going to change: that everyone is going to rally together, go and vote, and vote for the correct party.”

Following the results on Sunday, more players took to their social media handles and reacted to the developments.

‘The fight continues’

“Congratulations to all those who came forward in the face of the danger that hovered over our country,” forward Marcus Thuram shared on his Instagram story.

“Long live diversity, long live the Republic, long live France. The fight continues.”

‘Relief’

France defender Joules Kounde, who has voiced his political opinions frequently on social media, expressed his relief on X.

“The relief is as great as the anxiety of the last few weeks. Congratulations to all the French people who mobilized to ensure that this beautiful country of France would not be governed by the far-right.”

Le soulagement est à la hauteur de l’inquiétude de ces dernières semaines, il est immense.
Félicitations à tous les Français qui se sont mobilisés pour que ce beau pays qu’est la France ne se retrouve pas gouverné par l’extrême droite. 🙏🏾🇫🇷
