Rugby Sevens: All Blacks Sevens edged by Fiji in thriller at season-ending Madrid Sevens

All Blacks Sevens have played out a thriller against Fiji on their opener at the Madrid Sevens in Spain, the final tournament on the World Series calendar this season.

Tries to Moses Leo, Tepaea Cook Savage and Sam Dickson, who struck on the stroke of halftime, helped New Zealand take a 19-7 lead into the break.

Fiji's quick double strike after the interval put them back in front, until Joe Webber restored New Zealand's lead.

Ponepati Loganimasi's late try levelled the scores with fulltime expired, leaving Iowane Teba a difficult sideline conversion attempt.

But Teba was up to the task, calmly curling his conversion over the crossbar to seal victory for Fiji.

There was no such drama for Black Ferns Sevens, who demolished Great Britain 49-14 in their first match.

The world champions ran in seven tries, including a hat trick to Portia Woodman-Wickliffe.

All Blacks Sevens next face Ireland overnight, while Black Ferns Sevens take on Canada.
