How MS Dhoni puts CSK’s interest first over individual brilliance when new player joins team: ‘You have to let him go’

MS Dhoni in a video interaction shared how Chennai Super Kings as a franchise functions when it comes to integrating a new player in the team and also pointed out that if things don’t fall in place, the individual, however a big name that he is, is let go. This is because for the 42-year-old and the franchise, the team’s need is the priority.

“We get a very good player on our team, but he’s drastically different from our environment. So what do we look for? We want him to take that one step towards the team’s goal and we are happy to take three steps towards him. But let’s say that’s not the case. The second best thing is you keep doing what you are doing but don’t disrupt us. That’s the second-best option. The third is you have to let him go. Whether it’s business or sports, you want to do well at the end of the day. The think tank’s goal is to get the most out of the individual. If he’s very good for the team, I will try whatever ways to ensure he becomes an asset,” Dhoni said in a video shared by Chennai Super Kings.

Meanwhile, Dhoni’s future is one of the most hotly-debated topics in Indian cricket at the moment, especially after the Chennai Super Kings were eliminated by the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL 2024 group stages.

While Dhoni himself hasn’t spoken out about his future, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan recently told The Indian Express that the franchise has never asked Dhoni what his plans are after IPL 2024.

“There were no discussions in the dressing room about it. We have never asked him about his future and neither has he said anything about it. When he takes a decision, he will inform us, until then we will not interfere,” Viswanathan had told The Indian Express.

On Thursday, in a video posted by CSK’s official social media channel, Viswanathan added: “As all of you know, he has always taken his decisions and announced it at the appropriate time. We do expect that we will get a decision as and when he decides. But we are very, very hopeful that he will be available for CSK the next year. That is the view and expectations of the fans and mine.”
