IPL 2024 playoffs scenarios: How CSK and RCB can still make it to the knockout stage

IPL 2024 playoffs scenarios: With only ten league games to go the 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is almost at the business end of the tournament and the race to the playoffs has tightened up after Chennai Super Kings’ 35-run loss against Gujarat Titans. Chennai remained in the fourth and last playoff spot.

Meanwhile, after having a disastrous campaign, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have resurrected themselves with four wins on the bounce and are at 10 points with two league games to go.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) with 16 points are level with Rajasthan Royals (RR) on the points table but are placed at the top because of the improved net run rate (NRR). Both sides have three more games on their hands. On the other hand, Sunrisers Hyderabad are at third with 14 points and their last two fixtures are at home, one win out of the two matches will seal their spot in the top four, courtesy of their incredible RR.

Playoff scenarios for CSK

CSK’s next two games are against Rajasthan Royals at home and then RCB away. RR has hit a rough patch after suffering two close defeats against two successive defeats against Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals.

The Super Kings are currently fourth in the standings with 12 points from as many games but the defeat against Gujarat Titans on Friday has added dollops of pressure on them, and now they can’t afford to have any more slip-ups.

Playoff scenarios for RCB

RCB’s remaining two fixtures are at home against Delhi Capitals and CSK. In the run-up to this match, RCB had beaten Gujarat Titans twice, Punjab Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad once each. While the victory over SRH was valiant, RCB did not face much challenge from the floundering Titans and Kings.

Even after winning six in a row, the RCB will end up with 14 points, which will not be enough for them to make the cut. The Faf du Plessis side will not only have to win their remaining games while keeping a good NRR but will also have to hope that RR will beat CSK and then SRH will lose both of their games.

Playoff scenarios for DC

GT’s win against CSK was an encouraging sign for the Capitals. They will have to win beat RCB and LSG in their last two games with the hope that between SRH and CSK, one team will lose their remaining games.

LSG has no one but himself to blame. In 12 matches, they have 12 points and even they will end up beating DC and Mumbai Indians, both away fixtures, they be knocked out by RR, KKR, SRH and CSK finishing above them as they have got better NRRs. Just like DC, the KL Rahul-led team will have to bank on other results to go in their favour.
