NRL causes social media uproar by forgetting to mention New Zealand in Anzac Day post

The NRL has been blasted on social media after omitting New Zealand from its commemorative Anzac Day post.

Before the premier rugby league competition's annual slate of Anzac Day games began with the Warriors hosting the Titans in Auckland on Thursday, it shared a video on X with a caption paying tribute to the Australian servicemen, but made no mention of their New Zealand counterparts.

"In Round 8 of the Telstra Premiership, the game will have the opportunity to honour and commemorate the generations of Australian servicemen and women who have defended our values and freedoms, in wars, conflicts and peace operations," the post read.

"ANZAC Round: recognsing (sic) resilience & unity."

Users quickly pounced on the glaring oversight, which also included a spelling mistake, with a majority of the 50 replies pointing out its failure to include Aotearoa.

In accordance with prevailing demands in the replies, the post has since been deleted.

One of those commenters was former Sky Sports NRL commentator Jason Costigan, who wrote: "Can't believe NRL failed to mention the New Zealanders. After all, it is #AnzacDay this week!

"We all make mistakes but this must be called out! Remember, New Zealand has been part of Australia's premier #RugbyLeague competition for almost three decades!"

Another X user replied: "You may wish to take a minute and reflect on what ANZAC stands for. What it's an abbreviation of. And then - as a competition with a team from New Zealand - look at what's missing from your post."

"Delete this post and recognise our friends across the Tasman," wrote another.

The Warriors hosted their Anzac Day fixture for the first time in nine years, falling to a 27-24 defeat to Gold Coast at Auckland's Go Media Stadium.
