Football: Wellington Phoenix women return to winning ways, beat Newcastle Jets to go third on A-League ladder

Post At: Dec 25/2023 10:59AM

Wellington Phoenix have moved to third on the A-League Women's ladder, courtesy of a comfortable 2-0 win over Newcastle Jets at Sky Stadium.

After a shock defeat to strugglers Adelaide United last week, the Phoenix bounced back in style to end their three-game wait for a victory.

The win takes the Phoenix to within one point of league leaders Perth Glory, although second-placed Melbourne City have the chance to go top when they face cross-town rivals Melbourne Victory on Saturday night.

A win for the Victory, though, would see them leapfrog the Phoenix, with just three points separating the top four teams on the ladder.

An outstanding attacking display from Venezuelan import Mariana Speckmaier was the catalyst for the Phoenix's victory, after scoring the opening goal from the penalty spot, and assisting the second, scored by American Hope Breslin.

At the other end, the Phoenix were given a scare when goalkeeper Rylee Foster stayed down, having hit her head on the goalpost when making a save.

However, Foster played on, and was relatively untested as the Phoenix defence ended any and all threat of Newcastle scoring, as the Jets remain eighth on the ladder.

The Phoenix can close out their 2023 calendar year in style, when they travel to face sixth-place Sydney FC away from home on December 29.
