Kiwi golfer Lydia Ko has a puncher's chance of contending for the title at the Chevron Championship, heading into final day of the first LPGA Major of the year.

Ko's third round was cut short by inclement conditions at The Woodlands in Texas, with dangerous weather suspending play early, as she sat in a share of ninth at one-under through 14 holes.

At five under-par overall for the tournament, Ko is six shots adrift of outright leader Atthaya Thitikul from Thailand (11-under), with Canada's Brooke Henderson and American Nelly Korda a further shot back in a tie for second.

The delay means she will play 22 holes on Monday, as she chases her first Major victory since conquering the same event - then known as the ANA Inspiration - back in 2015.

As she had the prior two days, the world No.8 struggled off the blocks with two bogeys in her first six holes.

But she recovered admirably with three birdies to settle into an 11-way tie for ninth.

Ko needs just one more tour title to qualify for the LPGA Hall of Fame.
