Mumbai Indians scripted a unique record on Monday when they became the side to substitute a player so early in a match, namely just after the 1st over of the innings.

With Trent Boult striking twice in his first over, MI brought in Dewald Brevis in place of Naman Dhir who was dismissed off the last ball of the first over. Brevis wouldn’t last long either when he was sent back by fellow Protea Nandre Burger in the second over.

The franchise had a nightmare start with Rohit Sharma, Dhir and Brevis all departed for ducks while Ishan Kishan was sent back for just 16.

Tilak Varma and captain Hardik Pandya steadied the innings somewhat with respective scores of 32 and 34 before getting dismissed by Yuzvendra Chahal. After that, the procession of wickets continued with Tim David, Piyush Chawla and Gerald Coetze all back in the hut before Jasprit Bumrah and Akash Madhwal helped MI post 125.

Earlier, Pandya was booed by the fans as soon as his name was called out before the toss which led to Sanjay Manjrekar, who was conducting the toss, to call for the crowd to ‘behave.’

“It’s quite exciting to be a part of this game. We always look forward to the future, need to follow the process. Looking forward to playing a brand of cricket everyone enjoys,” Pandya, who on the surface looked confident, said after losing the toss.

Hardik has already been booed at two venues in Mumbai first two games of IPL 2024. He bore the brunt of the Gujarat Titans’ fans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, which was expected since Hardik had left the franchise to move back to Mumbai after leading them to the title in the first season.

However, Hardik also got stick from fans in the game against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
