Viswanathan Anand has been training hard for the upcoming Candidates 2024 tournament, which starts in Toronto next week. No, the five-time world champion is not competing this time. He will be sitting behind the mic as he dons the commentator’s hat for the role.

“Don’t be alarmed. I’m just warming up for the Candidates,” Anand says in a video posted on his social media handles by the chess legend.

He then proceeds to do various comical voice training and throat exercises before ending with a tongue twister.

Anand has done commentary before: most notably at the World Chess Championship last year where Ding Liren defeated Ian Nepomniachtchi to become the world champion.

While Anand is not featuring in this year’s Candidates, there will be five Indians in the fray: while 18-year-old Praggnanandhaa, 17-year-old Gukesh and 29-year-old Vidit Santosh Gujrathi will be the Indian representatives in the fray in the eight-man Open event at the Candidates, 22-year-old R Vaishali and 36-year-old Koneru Humpy will compete for the women’s crown.

Gukesh, Pragg and Vidit will face off against Ian Nepomniachtchi, Fabiano Caruana, Nijat Abasov, Hikaru Nakamura and Alireza Firouzja in the open Candidates category for the chance to face Liren in the next World Chess Championship.

Humpy and Vaishali, meanwhile, will slug it out against Lei Tingjie, Tan Zhongyi, Kateryna Lagno, Aleksandra Goryachkina, Nurgyul Salimova and Anna Muzychuk in the women’s event.

The Candidates will start with an Opening Ceremony on Wednesday (April 3).
