‘Tiger abhi zinda hai’: How cricketers reacted to that MS Dhoni catch in CSK vs GT IPL 2024 game

Former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni made jaws drop with an incredible catch in the Chennai Super Kings’ victory over Gujarat Titans in their second IPL 2024 game on Tuesday night.

The CSK faithful were initially left disappointed that MSD didn’t not face a single ball in the first innings at Chepauk, with Shivam Dube (51), Ruturaj Gaikwad (46) and Rachin Ravindra (46) propelling CSK to a competitive target of 206/6.

But Dhoni still managed to bring the roof down at the MA Chidambaram Stadium when he dove to his right to take an acrobatic catch and send Vijay Shankar back to the hut off the bowling of Daryl Mitchell.

The broadcasters later revealed that the 42-year-old Dhoni’s dive was measured at 2.27m.

While fans in Chepauk and on social media were left amazed, even those who have played cricket professionally at the top echelons, could not held but marvel. Here are the best reactions:

    'Tiger zinda hai': Suresh Raina

"Yeh baat yaad rakhiye sir #tigerabhizindahai @mahi7781 bhai (Just remember the fact that the tiger is still alive.) Always going strong & inspiring everyone around," said Suresh Raina on his Instagram feed with a clip of Dhoni taking the catch.

'Dhoni wound back the clock': Steve Smith

“Dhoni wound back the clock, didn't he? Just put a dive in there, it was 2.27 meters, it came up on the coverage, it was a great catch. He was standing a bit closer because Darryl Mitchell is not the quickest of bowlers so he was up nice and tight, didn't have a great deal of time to react but his reactions are certainly still there, aren't they? Covered ground nicely and just stuck in that right hand,” Steve Smith said on Star Sports.

'Dhoni doesn't have to bat to change the game': Stuart Broad

“Dhoni is still pretty good, isn’t he? He's a legend of the game. I feel for MS, he doesn't have to bat in a game and still manages to have a moment that moves or changes the game in less than a second. His teammates swarmed in delighted for him and the crowd in Chennai loved it so it was a great moment in the night,” Stuart Broad said on Star Sports.

'Udta Dhoni…. What a catch': Irfan Pathan

Former India cricketer Irfan Pathan reacted to the catch with an instant tweet that read: "Udta Dhoni…. What a catch"

The game also saw Ajinkya Rahane taking an acrobatic catch. In another tweet, Pathan asked: "Would you choose Dhoni’s catch or Rahane’s? My pick is Rahane, yours?"
