After all the weekend's drama - on and off the water - Black Foils driver Peter Burling can reflect on a job well done, after steering his team to SailGP victory at home on Lyttelton Harbour.

"It's been an abslutely amazing day," he told Newshub's Gordon Findlater. "So many people have come down here to Christchurch to cheer us on and it's blown us away to do that in front of home fans.

"The atmosphere and the buzz all weekend has been unbelievable. and to walk away with a win at the end of it is pretty special."

After winning at Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Burling missed the Sydney regatta on babywatch, so this victory completes a personal hattrick that also propels his New Zealand team to the top of the SailGP championship standings.

The immediate aftermath is all business, but he assures Newshub there will be time to celebrate later.

"There's a lot of more logistical stuff going on at the moment, like getting the boat out of the water, but it will definitely be a pretty fun evening, for sure," he said.
