Football: Melbourne City midfielder Terry Antonis caps goalfest with outrageous strike from halfway against Western Sydney Wanderers

As Melbourne City midfielder Terry Antonis gathered a bouncing ball near halfway, he snuck a look downfield towards goal and noticed opposition goalkeeper Lawrence Thomas off his line.

His audacious rightfoot strike carried a desperately retreating Thomas to find the back of the net and cap a 7-0 romp over Western Sydney Wanderers - a record defeat for the team that joined the A League in 2012.

The result came just three days after the Melbourne side edged tabletoppers Wellington Phoenix 1-0 and sees they leapfrog Western Sydney into the top-six playoff position on the competition table.

Trailling 4-0 at halftime, former Phoenix coach Mark Rudan used five substitutions in an attempt to stop the rot... to little avail.

Antonis' goal is being described as perhaps the greatest in league history.

"We might as well give Terry goal of the season," offered City coach Aurelio Vidmar. "He's a terrific guy and I'm really pleased for him.

"I think he probably couldn't have scripted it any better than that. He was probably dreaming last night of coming on and scoring, that is exactly what he did."

Poetically, Antonis, 30, played two seasons for Wanderers, scoring just one goal, but was unwanted by Rudan and switched to Melbourne City this season.
