Touching dropper to face? How to correctly apply serum to your skin for maximum benefits

Post At: Mar 03/2024 07:10PM

Serums have become a staple in skincare routines, offering a multitude of benefits, from hydration and brightening to anti-aging effects. However, applying serum properly is crucial to fully reap its benefits. Recently, dermatologist Dr Aanchal Panth discussed the correct way to apply serum to your face for maximum effectiveness.

Dr Panth warned against the common practice of spreading serum over the palms and applying it to the face, noting that this wastes product. She also advised against touching the serum dropper directly to the face, as it can contaminate the serum. Instead, she recommended taking a few drops onto your fingertips.

Furthermore, Dr Panth emphasised the importance of using the correct amount of serum. Using too much can cause irritation, particularly in sensitive areas like the sides of the nose, corners of the mouth, and eyelids, while using too little may not be effective. “Using the correct quantity is necessary,” she added.

Lastly, Dr Panth advised against rubbing or massaging the serum onto the face, as serums are typically thin liquid formulations that do not require such actions.

To apply serum correctly, Dr Panth outlined the following steps:

  • Take 3-4 drops onto the fingertips.
  • Apply the serum in small dots over the face.
  • Gently spread it to cover the entire face.
  • Ensure no areas of the face are skipped.
  • Avoid rubbing.

Here are other tips to keep in mind:

1. Start with clean skin: Before applying serum, ensure your face is thoroughly cleansed and free from any makeup, dirt, or impurities. Cleansing removes any barriers that may hinder the absorption of the serum into the skin, allowing it to penetrate more effectively.

2. Choose the right serum: Select a serum tailored to your specific skin concerns and needs. Whether you’re targeting hydration, brightening, anti-aging, or acne-fighting properties, there’s a serum formulation for every skin type and concern. Look for serums with active ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, retinol, or niacinamide, depending on your skincare goals.

3. Don’t forget the neck and decolletage: Extend the application of the serum down to your neck and decolletage to ensure comprehensive coverage. These areas are often neglected but can show signs of aging and sun damage, so it’s essential to include them in your skincare routine.

4. Allow for absorption: Give the serum some time to absorb fully into the skin before applying additional skincare products or makeup. This allows the active ingredients to penetrate deeply and work their magic effectively. Wait a few minutes before proceeding with your moisturiser or sunscreen.

5. Incorporate into your daily routine: Consistency is key when it comes to skincare. By using serum regularly, you’ll gradually see improvements in your skin’s texture, tone, and overall appearance.

However, Dr Panth cautioned that serums are not a cure-all for every skin condition, such as acne, melasma, scars, wrinkles, or sagging. “They are not a panacea for all skin concerns.” Nevertheless, using the right serums for skin concerns involving the upper skin layers can help improve skin appearance.
