Can PCOS be cured naturally?

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) affects millions of women worldwide, causing a range of symptoms from irregular periods and fertility issues to weight gain and hormonal imbalances. While conventional treatments often involve medication to manage symptoms, many women seek alternative methods to alleviate the effects of PCOS naturally. But can PCOS truly be cured without medication?

If nutritionist Apurwa Agarwal is to go by, then PCOS can be naturally cured by “30 mins walk, limited sugar, eating fibre daily, quality protein in every meal, and Omega 3 and vitamin D.”

However, the reality is far more complex. Dr Rashmi Dharaskar, senior consultant obstetrics and gynaecology, Surya Mother and Child Super speciality Hospital, Pune tells indianexpress.com that while there is no cure for the syndrome, there are several ways in which PCOS can be managed.

“Lifestyle management, including dietary habits and regular exercise remain pivotal tools to control the symptoms, which include missed or irregular periods, ovaries with large or several cysts, excess body hair, weight gain, acne and infertility, among others,” she says.

Here are some natural remedies to manage PCOS:

Balanced diet

Dietary modifications play a crucial role in managing PCOS symptoms naturally. Studies suggest that a diet low in dairy and carbohydrates can aid in weight loss, improve insulin sensitivity, and reduce excess testosterone levels in women with PCOS.

Incorporating complex carbohydrates like whole grains, whole wheat products, fruits, and vegetables, along with lean proteins, in your diet, while avoiding simple carbohydrates and sugars such as white bread, pasta, rice, cereal, cookies, and chips.

Weight management

Weight management is essential for restoring ovulation and regulating menstrual cycles in women with PCOS. Research indicates that losing between 5% to 10% of body weight can help manage PCOS symptoms and reduce the risk of chronic conditions like diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

Individuals can focus on weight management through a combination of dietary changes and regular exercise to regulate hormones, improve physical symptoms, and enhance emotional well-being for those with PCOS.

Alleviate stress

Stress management techniques, such as yoga, meditation, deep breathing exercises, or mindfulness practices, can help reduce stress levels and cortisol production, which may contribute to hormonal imbalances in women with PCOS.

Additionally, prioritising adequate sleep and establishing a consistent sleep schedule are also essential for hormone regulation and overall health.

Supplements and herbal remedies

Certain supplements and herbal remedies have gained popularity in the natural treatment of PCOS. Inositol, a B-vitamin-like compound, has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity and ovarian function in women with PCOS.

Similarly, supplements such as omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, and magnesium may offer benefits in managing PCOS symptoms.

Herbal remedies like chasteberry (vitex), cinnamon, and spearmint tea have also been studied for their potential to regulate menstrual cycles and reduce androgen levels in women with PCOS.

While these natural remedies may help alleviate PCOS symptoms and improve quality of life, it’s essential to approach treatment holistically and consult with a healthcare professional before making any significant changes.
