As the festive season unfolds, the happy vibes of Christmas and New Year often come hand in hand with the not-so-happy morning-after experience – the notorious hangover. If you find yourself waking up with a pounding headache and a queasy stomach after revelling in the festivities, fret not. This guide is here to offer you practical tips and remedies to kick that hangover to the curb and get you back on your feet.

Ekta Singhwal, dietician, Ujala Cygnus Group of Hospitals recommended staying hydrated during Christmas and New Year celebrations by drinking at least 8-10 glasses (64-80 ounces) of water throughout the day, especially if you consume alcohol, to help counter its dehydrating effects.

If the damage has already been done and you’re reading this the morning after, worry not. We have things to help with that too!

To recover from a hangover, Singhwal suggested the following.

a. Rehydrate with water or electrolyte-rich drinks.

Restore electrolyte balance with beverages rich in electrolytes, such as sports drinks or coconut water. These will not only help hydrate you but also replenish essential minerals that alcohol tends to deplete.

b. Consume a balanced meal with carbohydrates, proteins, and healthy fats.

While the idea of food might not be the most appealing, a nutrient-rich breakfast can do wonders. Opt for foods that are easy on the stomach, such as whole grains, fruits, and lean proteins. These can help stabilise blood sugar levels and provide the energy needed for recovery.

Always follow recommended dosage guidelines.

c. Take pain relievers cautiously, following recommended doses.

Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or aspirin can help alleviate headaches and muscle soreness. However, be cautious with acetaminophen, as it can be hard on your liver when combined with alcohol. Always follow recommended dosage guidelines.

d. Rest to allow your body to recover.

If your schedule allows, consider catching up on some extra sleep. Rest is a crucial component of recovery, and allowing your body the time it needs to recuperate can expedite the hangover healing process.

e. Avoid “hair of the dog” – more alcohol – as it delays recovery and can worsen dehydration.

The best way to avoid a hangover is, of course, moderation. Alternate alcoholic drinks with water, eat before drinking, and know your limits. Understanding your body’s response to alcohol can go a long way in preventing future hangovers.

Here are 2 hangover drinks you can try.

a. Coconut Water and Pineapple Juice Blend

– Mix equal parts coconut water and pineapple juice.
– Coconut water helps rehydrate, while pineapple juice provides vitamins.
– Serve over ice for a refreshing, hydrating beverage.

b. Ginger Mint Lemonade

– Combine fresh ginger slices, mint leaves, and lemon juice.
– Add water and a touch of honey for sweetness.
– Ginger aids digestion, mint soothes the stomach, and lemon provides vitamins.
