Most of us struggle with a variety of health issues that stem from a lack of immunity. While improving your immunity is an ongoing process, simple diet tweaks can aid it. One such is having munakka, or black grape raisins, which offer various health benefits. However, many of us aren’t aware that soaking them overnight can enhance their nutritional value. Here’s what experts have to say.

“Soaking munakka in water overnight enhances its nutritional profile and makes it more digestible,” said Dr Ranga Santosh Kumar, consultant general physician and diabetologist, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad.

Experts also suggest that it is effective in relieving dry cough and respiratory tract inflammation owing to its cough suppressant and soothing properties.

In addition to these benefits, soaked munakka offers a quick energy boost owing to its natural sugars. “The augmented water content not only aids in digestion but also contributes to hydration, promoting overall well-being,” said Dr Dilip Gude, senior consultant physician, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad.

Dr Kumar explained some key reasons to include soaked munakka in your diet:

Digestive health: Soaking munakka softens the dried fruit, making it easier to digest and relieving issues like constipation. The increased fibre content supports overall digestive well-being.

Natural laxative: Munakka acts as a gentle natural laxative, aiding in promoting regular bowel movements and preventing constipation. Agreed Dr Gude, and shared, “This natural laxative effect is attributed to the heightened fibre content, supporting regular bowel movements.”

Iron absorption: Munakka is a good source of iron, and soaking it can enhance iron absorption. This is particularly beneficial for individuals with iron-deficiency anaemia. “Munakka serves as a significant source of iron, and the soaking process enhances iron absorption. This is especially advantageous for individuals managing iron-deficiency anemia, contributing to improved iron levels in the body,” said Dr Gude.

Antioxidant boost: Munakka contains antioxidants that help combat oxidative stress, reducing inflammation and supporting overall health.

Energy and hydration: The natural sugars in munakka provide a quick energy boost, while the increased water content contributes to hydration.

Including soaked munakka in your daily routine is a simple and natural way to promote digestive health, boost energy, and enjoy the potential benefits of its enriched nutritional content, said Dr Kumar.
