Ayushmann Khurrana: ‘I have managed to circle myself with family and friends who insulate me from the world of glitz and glamour’

Anything you write about Ayushmann Khurrana seems insufficient when it comes to describing the many talents he possesses. He is an immensely talented actor, a singer, a poet, a fashion icon, and also someone who sets massive fitness goals — the list, indeed, is never-ending. So, when we got a chance to interact with him, we had so much to ask (in so little time). But we did, and the best part is that the Bala actor happily and (patiently) responded to all our queries!

From his journey to workouts, fashion, and social media, Ayushmann Khurrana — recently announced by Bulgari as a “friend of the brand” — opened up about it all and also shared one thing about himself that, he claims, not many people know. Read the edited excerpts below:

From winning a reality show to numerous awards as an actor, how would you describe your career graph?

My journey has been a rollercoaster, evolving from the victory of a reality show to receiving numerous awards as an actor. Each project has been a unique chapter, from Vicky Donor to Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, allowing me to explore different facets of drama and connect with audiences. In my opinion, I’ve taken up challenging roles to push the boundaries of Indian cinema; the movies and songs are not just milestones, but reflections of the collective efforts poured into creating exceptional cinematic experiences for the audience. I’m grateful for the support and love while equally excited for the future chapters.

Over the years, you have not shied away from experimenting with different genres. But what is it that you thoroughly enjoy?

I grew up being fascinated by the works of towering heroes like Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna, Shah Rukh Khan, Anil Kapoor, Salman Khan, and Aamir Khan, to name a few. I also wanted to be a big-screen hero. So, I’m living my dream now and am extremely fortunate to have created a niche for myself. Personally for me, delivering a shared community-watching experience has always been my priority as an entertainer. I have always chosen my films keeping in mind the movies I would like to watch in cinemas.

Being an actor requires you to stay healthy and fit. As such, what does your daily diet and exercise routine look like?

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is important. Food is really important to me but then luckily, I also have a great metabolism. My daily routine includes a balanced diet and exercise. I try to compensate for my cheat meals by adding extra time at the gym.

If you could also tell us a little bit about your love for poetry and singing?

Poetry, for me, is a beautiful form of expression, allowing me to convey my emotions, experiences, and personal reflections. Having said that, I have always believed that I am more of an actor than a singer or a poet. I am glad that I got opportunities with my music. The actor part of me helps me to work with my music because it is food for the soul. Most of my songs are in Punjabi and are close to my roots. And they are my expression in my truest form. As an actor, I play different characters that are away from my core, but I put my core in front of me when I make music.

In a similar vein, fashion is also an important part of your everyday routine. How would you describe your style? Is it something you enjoy indulging in?

I think growing up I have always been particular in my fashion choices and I do enjoy experimenting with fashion. However, I am lucky that in my line of work, I can enjoy wearing different couture and styles without having to own these garments. I am a minimalist. My style is low-key and comfortable, and I enjoy accessorising the look with a watch or a statement piece like the Bulgari ‘B.zero1 Kada Bracelet’. Fashion, for me, is an extension of my personality. It’s not just about trends but finding a style that resonates with who I am, making the entire process enjoyable and authentic.

One piece of accessory you think can make or break a look?

In my opinion, a versatile accessory that adds glamour to your outfit has the power to make or break a look. For example, the B.zero1 Kada Bracelet, an exclusive-to-India accessory, can make your outfit speak volumes. So, finding the right accessory is a key element in perfecting a look.

Actors, today, are under constant limelight — how do you manage the pressures of being a star, which can take a toll on one’s mental health?

Yes…the pressures of being in the spotlight are undoubtedly challenging. However, I have managed to circle myself with family and friends who are not from the industry and they kind of insulate me from this world of glitz and glamour. They keep me grounded and tell me the right things — when I need them the most. It’s crucial to maintain a balance between work and personal life and I have consciously managed to tread this balance.

Social media, too, can be a challenging space for many people. How do you deal with the negativity that comes with being on it? If given a chance, would you opt to stay away from it?

Negativity on social media is unavoidable, but I approach it with silence. Social media is a two-way thing. Focusing on positive interactions and constructive feedback helps me maintain a good performance. While the negativity can be disheartening, the platform also provides a valuable connection with my audience. If given a chance, I wouldn’t opt to stay away entirely, as social media is a powerful tool for communication and connecting with people. Instead, I choose to filter out the noise by prioritising meaningful comments.

One thing not many people know about you.

I have a limited wardrobe and if I like something, I usually keep repeating them till they aren’t worn out.

What can we expect from you in 2024?

I’m going to experiment with a lot of genres in 2024. My slate of films will be extremely diverse, as always, and will focus solely on delivering quality theatrical experience to the audience. I’m currently locking some interesting films that one will love watching with the entire family in theaters.
