A Bollywood-inspired wedding is a dream for many, filled with grandeur, opulence, and of course, the perfect lehenga stealing the spotlight. While the film industry’s leading ladies may adorn couture masterpieces worth a fortune, you can turn your Bollywood wedding dreams into reality without breaking the bank.

Whether it is your bridal trousseau or your wedding lehenga, there are ways to go the Bollywood way and not burn a crater-sized hole in your pocket. Celebrity stylist Rishi Raj believes it’s all about being creative and resourceful while staying true to your own style.

“Plan ahead and be a smart shopper. Look out for sales, and discounts, and even consider exploring second-hand or thrift stores. You never know, you might find some hidden gems that add a unique touch to your ensemble,” he said.

Another great idea is to raid your mother or grandmother’s closet for timeless pieces that can be styled in your own way, Raj added. “Trust me, it’s a treasure trove of beautiful outfits waiting to be rediscovered!”

Professor Devender Singh Kharb, dean, School of Fashion, World University of Design, WUD, recommended shopping strategically in areas like Chandni Chowk, Lajpat Nagar, or Rajouri Garden, for those who are in Delhi or can pop by. He also suggested checking out pre-loved designer collections for sustainable yet affordable choices.

Do some fabrics look rich even if they don’t cost as much?

When striving for budget-friendly yet stylish wedding looks, consider affordable fabric alternatives such as chiffon, georgette, or even silk blends. According to Raj, these lightweight materials not only drape beautifully but also have an inherent luxurious appeal. “Additionally, consider subtle textures like lace or jacquard, which can give the illusion of a pricier outfit without actually splurging.”

Look for sales or clearance sections in budget-friendly stores like those in Chandni Chowk or Rajouri Garden, where you can get kapda by the metre.

Something one might forget but is just as important, if not more so, is the fit. Don’t shy away from getting your clothing tailored. “We, in India, are blessed with an abundance of local Master jis. A small alteration can make a world of difference and give you that perfect fit without breaking your budget,” explained Raj.

Is renting an outfit a good idea?

It can be an excellent option, especially for plus-size individuals, as it offers access to a wider range of sizes and high-quality outfits without a significant cost, according to Kharb.

Renting also allows you to wear designer pieces that might otherwise be outside your budget. “Just remember to book in advance and try on the outfit prior to the event to ensure a seamless fit,” suggested Raj.

It’s important to note that rented outfits may lack the personal touch and perfect fit that tailored garments provide, warned Kharb. Additionally, while Chandni Chowk and Rajouri Garden may have local boutiques and designers offering rental options or affordable tailored solutions, availability and variety could be limited compared to traditional shopping.

What about accessories and shoes?

Never underestimate the power of accessories and hairstyling. They are your secret weapons to take any simple outfit to a whole new level of elegance and style, said Raj. Whether it’s a statement piece of jewellery, a trendy clutch, or a chic hairdo, these little details can transform your entire look and make you stand out in the crowd.

Embrace the grandeur of Indian accessories, advised Raj. Think statement earrings that sparkle, like a Chaandbaali, a stylish clutch embellished with intricate embroidery, or a standout belt that cinches your waist with elegant charm.

And let’s not forget the beauty and quiet luxury of fresh florals. Adorn your hair with a fragrant gajra or opt for a delicate floral hairpin to bring a touch of stylish sophistication to your ensemble.

When it comes to shoes, remember that comfort is key. You’ll be dancing all night (hopefully!), so opt for trendy yet comfortable options like block heels adorned with traditional motifs or beautifully embellished flats. These footwear choices will not only keep your feet happy but also add that extra touch of style and grace to your overall look.

“Always keep in mind that it’s the little details that can make a big impact!” said Raj.
