Why are respiratory infections concerning for those over 70?

Dr Ravi Shekher Jha, senior consultant, department of pulmonology, MRCP, Fortis Hospital, Faridabad, said respiratory tract infections are caused by various pathogens, primarily viruses and bacteria.

According to Dr Jha, these pathogens spread through direct contact with infected individuals or by touching contaminated surfaces, which get transferred to the skin by touch. “Poor air quality and environmental factors in India further exacerbate the spread and severity of these infections,” he told indianexpress.com, adding that respiratory infections can be especially serious in those over 70 due to several age-related factors.

Some reasons include:

Weakened immune system: As people age, their immune systems typically become less effective, making it harder to fight off infections like the flu, pneumonia, or bronchitis. Older adults may also take longer to recover.

Chronic health conditions: Many people over 70 have chronic health issues such as heart disease, diabetes, or lung diseases like COPD or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. “These conditions can worsen the effects of a respiratory infection, leading to more severe symptoms or complications,” said Dr Jha.

Decreased lung function: The lungs naturally lose some of their capacity and elasticity with age, reducing their ability to clear out infections. “This can result in infections that last longer or lead to serious conditions like pneumonia,” explained Dr Jha.

Risk of complications: Dr Jha elaborated that respiratory infections in older adults can more easily lead to complications, including respiratory failure or sepsis. “Hospitalisation and intensive treatment may be required, and recovery can be slower,” said Dr Jha.

“The best way to avoid these is to keep comorbidities under control (like good control on your sugar levels) and also to get yourself annually vaccinated against flu and regular vaccination against pneumonia,” said Dr Jha.
