Yesterday, the princess delivered heartening news on social media — completing her chemotherapy treatment. In a heartfelt video featuring Princess Catherine, her husband Prince William, and their three children, she said, “As the summer comes to an end, I cannot tell you what a relief it is to have finally completed my chemotherapy treatment. The last nine months have been incredibly tough for us as a family. Life as you know it can change in an instant and we have had to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and road unknown.”

She added, “This time has above all reminded William and me to reflect and be grateful for the simple yet important things in life, which so many of us often take for granted. Of simply loving and being loved. Doing what I can to stay cancer-free is now my focus. Although I have finished chemotherapy, my path to healing and full recovery is long and I must continue to take each day as it comes.”

Gurleen Baruah, occupational psychologist and executive coach at That Culture Thing tells indianexpress.com, “Rebuilding self-confidence after cancer is deeply personal, involving both physical changes and emotional scars.”

But just as survivors have shown strength in fighting cancer, they can also find strength in healing, step by step:

First, it’s okay to feel the loss. Cancer can change your body unexpectedly, whether it’s scars, weight changes, or other physical differences. Take time to acknowledge these changes. It’s normal to feel sad, angry, or even frustrated, but it’s important to allow yourself to grieve what’s different.

Focusing on your strengths is a powerful way to rebuild confidence. You survived something incredibly difficult, which speaks volumes about your inner strength. Let that be your anchor. By focusing on how far you’ve come, you can rebuild confidence in who you are now.

Reconnect with the world slowly, on your terms. After treatment, it can feel intimidating to face people again, especially when you’re still adjusting to your ‘new normal.’ Take small steps to engage with friends and family. Surround yourself with those who support and uplift you.

Role of a structured self-care routine in the recovery process

Baruah says, “A structured self-care routine helps regain control and reconnect with life after cancer. Start by taking small steps to rebuild strength, like gentle walks or yoga. Engage in daily practices to process emotions, such as journaling or mindfulness. Create simple routines to restore normalcy, focus on nourishing foods, and prioritise rest to promote healing. Lean on loved ones for support, connect with other survivors, and practice gratitude to find peace and positivity. Self-care is about reclaiming your sense of self and moving forward with hope.”

Reconnecting with hobbies or discovering new interests

Reconnecting with hobbies or discovering new interests after chemotherapy can be vital for emotional healing, says Baruah. “It helps rediscover your identity and provides a creative outlet for processing emotions. Exploring new activities can bring a sense of empowerment and help you stay present.”

Hobbies also foster social connections, build confidence, and restore a sense of purpose. Whether it’s returning to an old passion or trying something new, these activities offer moments of joy and mindfulness, aiding in emotional recovery.
