Milk has long been hailed as a nutritional powerhouse, offering a rich source of calcium, protein, and essential vitamins and minerals. However, the question of whether consuming milk on an empty stomach is beneficial or detrimental has sparked debate.

Dr Sonali Gautam, Consultant Gastroenterologist & Hepatology at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Navi Mumbai, emphasises the nutritional value of milk, highlighting its role in promoting bone health, supporting overall well-being, and contributing to a balanced diet.

What are the benefits of drinking milk?

Milk is an excellent source of calcium, phosphorus, and protein, essential for building and maintaining strong bones and teeth, said Dr Gautam. It also provides a good balance of carbohydrates and fats, making it a well-rounded food.

She added that milk contains several essential vitamins and minerals, including vitamin D, vitamin B12, and magnesium, which contribute to various bodily functions.

Should you drink it on an empty stomach?

The belief that drinking milk on an empty stomach can be harmful is largely unfounded, according to Dr Gautam.

While some individuals may experience digestive discomfort due to lactose intolerance, medical studies have not shown any adverse effects of consuming milk on an empty stomach for the general population. In fact, Dr Gautam noted that high-protein milk consumed at breakfast has been linked to better blood sugar control in individuals with diabetes.

Things to consider

Lactose intolerance, a condition characterised by the inability to digest lactose, can cause digestive symptoms such as bloating, gas, and diarrhoea. Especially since many Indians are lactose intolerant without even knowing it.

If you suspect lactose intolerance, Dr Gautam advised that it’s essential to consult a healthcare professional for diagnosis and appropriate dietary modifications. Plant-based milk alternatives, such as almond milk, soy milk, or coconut milk, can be considered as substitutes for dairy milk in such cases.

Milk is a valuable component of a balanced diet, offering a range of essential nutrients. While lactose intolerance is a factor to consider, for most people, consuming milk, including on an empty stomach, is generally safe and can contribute to overall health and well-being. It’s essential to listen to your body and make adjustments as needed.
